As the miracle of Elizabeth and Zacharias having this prophesied child unfolds, her young relative makes a visit. And she too has had a miraculous pregnancy. Elizabeth is six months along now and receives some much-needed help from her young relative, Mary, who is expecting as well. But the child she carries is our Lord Jesus. And she is less than one week along.
Perhaps Elizabeth is Mary’s aunt. We’re not sure. But what a scene as she enters! Elizabeth’s child, John, leaps in her womb as he is filled with the Holy Spirit—Yes, six-month-old John. And after her baby leaps in her womb, Elizabeth shares a beautiful praise! Take a moment to read Luke’s account:
“At the sound of Mary’s greeting, Elizabeth’s child leaped within her, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. Elizabeth gave a glad cry and exclaimed to Mary, “God has blessed you above all women, and your child is blessed. Why am I so honored, that the mother of my Lord should visit me? When I heard your greeting, the baby in my womb jumped for joy. You are blessed because you believed that the Lord would do what he said” (Luke 1:39-45).
This is amazing. The baby in Mary’s womb, not yet a week old, is already her Lord… Elizabeth believes the message about this one-week-old Messiah in Mary’s womb. Elizabeth believed that God’s message to her was fulfilled. And She believed what the prophets said about a coming Son of God who would be Lord of all.
In this way we share something very closely in common with Elizabeth. Just as she had not seen the Lord Jesus but only the Scriptures and promises, and effects of His working within her. We do not see Him but we believe the Scriptures, the promises and the effects of His working in us. This blessing then from her reminds me of a similar blessing that ends the Gospel of John from Jesus own words:
Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed” (John 20:29).
